Ciudadanía Digital: Una Oportunidad de Formación e Innovación

Social networks are not only almost omnipresent spaces in digital society, they also represent an opportunity to educate in citizenship, security and human rights. This paper seeks to reflect on how education in new technologies needs to go beyond the strictly functional to a deeper understanding of their risks, yes, but also how virtual presences are spaces for the expression of values, duties and rights. To this end, we will explain the concept of Digital Citizenship and explore innovative educational proposals on the subject and, through these experiences, demonstrate how the greater involvement of parents and teachers can encourage students to adopt a critical attitude towards the contents of these new media, ethical behavior in Internet spaces and responsible use that does not violate their safety and respects their own and others' privacy. We will study the resources of Common Sense Education, an online guide to educate in Digital Citizenship at all school levels, created with the support of Project Zero of Harvard, and its related page, Common Sense Media, which reviews audiovisual products (movies and TV series), books, apps, websites and video games with guidelines for parents on age recommendation, content criteria and even recommendations for topics of conversation after consumption.
