Participatory budgeting emerged in Brazil in the nineties as a new methodology for an increased participatory democracy and a reinforced social representation through the participation of people in the creation of public policies and in determining the budget for their area. The level of dissemination and application of participatory budgeting worldwide as well as the implications to the rural and local economies that applied it —especially municipalities— is unknown. In this regard, we systematically analyzed scientific literatutre on participatory budgeting on publications indexed by Web of Science, Scopus, and Redalyc from 2000 to 2014. By using a matrix, we organized, analyzed and synthesized information such as: title, author, year of publication, country of the academic institution to which the first author is affiliated, name of the conference or the journal, country of the journal or the conference, line of research and application of common topics. The results enabled us to understand the development of the research around participatory budgeting. There is also a qualitative analysis about the implications of participatory budgeting in rural, local and municipal economies. The analisis shows that publications which analyze the impact caused in places where it was applied are scarce, and publications that analyze the impact from a quantitative point of view are even more scarce.
