Abstract
New generation optical networks present one of the most promising solutions for satisfying the ultra-wide bandwidth demand required by the exponential increase of traffic to and from final users. Particularly, WDM-PON offer one of the most scalable solutions. Even, the WDM-PON capability is further potentiated by the use of advanced modulation formats and spectrum optimization techniques (like UDWDM). However, this increases the complexity and in consequence the cost. The present work makes a review of the main problems related with the limitations for new generation PON great scale deployment. We make emphasis in the main tendencies and most popular PON technologies which are currently under research.
