Abstract
In general, the faults that affect the Electrical Power Systems (EPS) are characterized by being of very short duration and having large variations in magnitude. For these reasons, if timely corrective actions are not taken, they could lead to a complete collapse of the electrical system. Transmission line failures are mostly caused by technical and environmental problems. In this context, the present work seeks to provide a practical application for the Wavelet Transform focused on the localization of faults in electrical systems and more specifically in transmission lines, using the traveling wave method. For this purpose, an algorithm was developed in MatLab, which recreates and then determines the distance in which the fault occurred. Finally, the proposed algorithm was tested in three real cases of faults occurring in the Ecuadorian electrical system and the results obtained show that the tool has an excellent degree of accuracy with respect to fault location with an average accuracy of 91% for the simulated cases.
