Abstract

Since 2007, several analysts have pointed out that the expansion of energy crops (as an alternative to climate change) is having a negative impact on food. The main critics say that energy plantations are either using food crops for fuel production, such as corn, or displacing agricultural land with these energy crops. Among the most vocal critics is the UN rapporteur on the right to food Jean Ziegler, who said that the use of food crops for fuel is a recipe for disaster and constitutes a crime against humanity. Thus, proposals are emerging to use marginal lands, which are not being used for food production, for pine nut (Jatropha curcas) and fig tree plantations because they can grow in dry areas, degraded lands and with little access to water. Of the two crops, piñón is the most promoted.
