Abstract

Air pollution in cities is a process that has grown over the years. Currently, efforts have been made to reduce this pollution and understand the factors involved through a good environmental management, identifying pollution sources with techniques such as passive and automatic air quality monitoring stations as in the case of the city of Quito and many other large cities. The present work conducts an investigation to define whether environmental indices generated from satellite images together with field data that are adapted to simple and multiple regression models can be used in Ecuador, obtaining satisfactory results in the city of Quito, leading to the fact that the model that best fits is the one that linearly relates the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) with Particulate Matter greater than 10 microns (PM10) (Othman et al., 2010), with positive correlation values of over 90%. In the city, air quality data such as PM10 are available on a daily basis thanks to the presence of monitoring stations, which when combined with satellite image data seek to generalize throughout the study area the places where there are air pollution problems, considering municipal actions to be taken on these present points. The results obtained in the research are able for each of the three years to infer the value of PM10 throughout the city.
