Abstract
The correlation between decentralization and democracy is mediated by multiple factors, among which the character and role of the State, its articulation with globalization processes, the type of territorial organization that is promoted, changed or reproduced, and the correlation of forces existing in the scenario of political struggle stand out. The text briefly reviews these aspects, taking as a reference the Ecuadorian process of the last two decades, whose results it alludes to without leaving aside in the central note a panoramic perspective that opens new questions with a view to defining new lines of knowledge production and debate.
