Abstract

Piper puvinervulum C. DC. is a medicinal plant used by the Amazonian indigenous people of southern Ecuador, the leaves have aromatic characteristics. The objective of this research is to extract and analyze the chemical properties and biological activity of the essential oil from the leaves. The study of chemical composition through GC-MS and 1H NMR yielded the detection of 44 constituents within which b caryophyllene, isoeugenol-methyl ether, asarone and nerolidol were the major ones. The antioxidant activity of the oil was evaluated by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt) and photochemiluminescence (PCL) methods. In addition, activity studies were performed using bioautographic (HP)TLC-DPPH. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the disk diffusion method on two Gram+ bacteria, two Gram- bacteria and two yeasts. The most interesting results occur with the two yeasts Candida tropicalis (MIC 0.77 mg/ml) and Candida albicans (MIC 0.33mg/ml) where the activity was similar to the essential oil of Thymus vulgaris the natural reference standard. The good results with respect to antifungal activity lead us to conclude that the essential oil could be used for this purpose.
